The Centre for Community Networking Research, as part of the Centre for Organisational and Social Informatics (COSI), Caulfield School of Information Technology, at Monash University, aims to understand how communities and community organisations shape and are shaped by different social-technical relationships. We conduct both practical and theoretical research through funded research, PhD student research, and collaborations with colleagues at Monash, in Australia and internationally. CCNR also supports the yearly Community Informatics Research Network (CIRN) conferences at the Monash Centre, Prato, Italy.
A conference paper by Amanda Cossham won the ‘best paper’ award. Amanda is our PhD candidate. The 2013 conference was on Conceptions of Library and Information Science at the Royal School of Library and Information Science, Copenhagen. The commendation was as follows.
“The paper discusses the functional requirements for bibliographic records model (known as the FRBR-model) from a historical and critical analytic perspective. It argues that the major ruptures in the form, format, nature, publishing and relationships of information resources challenge the model. Users' information seeking behavior, understanding and expectations contest the model too. Thus the model may no longer be sufficient as a theoretical and conceptual basis for cataloguing rules. In short the usefulness and relevance of the FRBR on capturing bibliographic information in the social web era is in question.
The paper questions a central theoretical model within librarian practice. It has the courage to think independently and critically. It is thus expected that this paper provokes a critical reflection on the FRBR-model and the bibliographic universe mapped in the model.”
